Tinnitus affects one in ten people in Germany. The sounds and symptoms vary from person to person, and the causes can be just as diverse. Since, from a medical perspective, tinnitus is a symptom rather than a disease, pinpointing the exact cause is even more difficult. It is therefore important to tailor treatment methods to each individual. What works for one person may have no effect—or even the opposite effect—on others. Nevertheless, tinnitus research is tirelessly working to find methods and treatments that can at least alleviate the ringing in the ears.
The latest finding: treating tinnitus with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Until now, this mindfulness-based cognitive therapy has been used primarily to treat depression. Now, researchers have discovered that this form of mindfulness therapy also helps people with tinnitus. The goal is for them to develop skills that enable them to reduce their overall stress levels.
What is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)?
This treatment method focuses on consciously and fully experiencing the present moment—in contrast to the previous strategy of suppressing tinnitus and distracting oneself from it. This therapy is based on acceptance and consciously dealing with current circumstances. MBCT draws on yoga, breathing exercises, and mindfulness meditation, among other techniques. In parallel with these relaxation techniques, it incorporates cognitive-behavioral therapy interventions: for example, patients learn to observe thoughts that arise automatically and to deal with them in a non-judgmental way.
Relief for People with Tinnitus
Being able to find peace and relax despite the symptoms—rather than fighting them head-on and struggling vigorously. According to the researchers, this can help counteract, over the long term, the emotional stress, difficulty falling asleep, trouble concentrating, and inner restlessness—which are often the consequences of tinnitus.
It is important to note that MBCT cannot cure tinnitus. However, as studies show, it can be particularly helpful for people with chronic forms of tinnitus, helping them to relax again and thereby improve their quality of life.
