Modern hearing aids allow musicians to play music without any problems

Musicians are constantly exposed to loud noise as part of their jobs. If their hearing no longer functions properly, it not only reduces their quality of life, but their passion for music and their careers can also suffer. Modern hearing technology has a variety of solutions to offer.

Musicians are true multitasking pros. Pianists can play different melodies and rhythms with both hands simultaneously while keeping an eye not only on their sheet music and a conductor but also on the singer they’re accompanying. They owe these amazing coordination and motor skills in no small part to their healthy hearing. Whether they’re orchestra musicians, pop stars, or rock stars, a good sense of hearing is extremely important for every musician—sometimes it even ensures their livelihood. But what can be done when hearing begins to decline?

According to a survey by “The Hearing Review,” 52 percent of classical orchestra members and up to 30 percent of rock and pop musicians suffer from music-induced hearing loss—or “MIHL” for short. The German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) is the best-known example of a musician who suffered from hearing loss. Thanks to advanced hearing technology, his deafness would likely have been preventable today. British musician Phil Collins, for example, sought treatment for his hearing problems early on and made his comeback last year. And Bono, lead singer of the band U2, even wrote a song about his experience with sudden hearing loss and has regained his full quality of life.

While hearing loss caused by (too loud) music is irreversible, the latest generation of hearing aids allows musicians to continue pursuing their passion without restriction. While hearing aids in the past reached their limits with louder sounds, modern hearing systems—thanks to advanced chip technology—are now able to reproduce even dynamic sounds at high volumes with natural quality and without distortion.

Hearing problems among musicians are not uncommon, even if some are reluctant to talk about them. However, with the right treatment and, if necessary, custom-fitted hearing aids, help is available. Be open and trust the advice of your audiologist so that you can continue to enjoy your passion for music.
