Have you ever experienced this? You’re at an event with several people. Many different voices blend together into a cacophony from which you can’t make out a single voice. But then you suddenly hear your name. From that moment on, the background noise fades away. You hear only the person who has caught your attention by calling your name.
This ability—or rather, this acoustic phenomenon—is called selective listening or the cocktail party effect. The cocktail party effect occurs when you want to listen to a specific speaker amidst several different sources of noise.
What is the cocktail party effect?
This refers to the phenomenon of selective listening, in which a person can follow individual conversations even in environments with a lot of background noise and voices—such as at a cocktail party—by unconsciously filtering out the rest of the sounds.
Why can you hear your own name even when there's noise?
Thanks to our brains, we are fundamentally able to distinguish between sounds that are unimportant to us and those that are important. To do this, our ears unconsciously filter and emotionally evaluate these sounds. This is why, for example, it’s possible to follow a conversation while many other conversations are taking place around us and the clinking of glasses can be heard.
Limitations of Selective Hearing
However, not everyone is able to listen selectively without restriction. As people get older, in particular, many find this difficult. This is because the ability to listen selectively declines with age. The rate at which this happens varies from person to person. For example, some people as young as 50 may already have difficulty filtering out background noise, while some 75-year-olds are still quite capable of doing so.
People with hearing loss also often have trouble blocking out background noise during a conversation. This is because selective listening requires fully functional hearing in both ears. The cocktail party effect is a binaural phenomenon; it occurs only when hearing is present in both ears. People who have only one functioning ear or who rely on hearing aids are therefore significantly more affected by background noise than people who hear equally well with both ears.
However, there is a way to restore selective hearing to a certain extent. This is achieved using two digital hearing aids that communicate wirelessly with each other. Through the interaction between the left and right ears, certain speech-relevant sounds are amplified, while distracting background noise is specifically filtered out and suppressed. This enables the user to hear spatially and selectively once again. Clinical tests also confirm this.
People Who Do Not Practice Selective Listening
In addition, there are also people who, regardless of the limitations already listed, are unable to filter what they perceive. These people suffer from hyperacusis, a specific form of noise sensitivity. It stems from a disturbance in the evaluation and processing of perceived sounds.
Unlike in normal cases, the brain does not block out distracting noises but instead brings them into sharper focus. This results in these sounds being perceived as far too loud. In addition to a reduced ability to tolerate sounds, hyperacusis causes anxiety and aggression, which, over time, lead those affected to severely limit their social interactions.
If you recognize yourself in this description, you should consult your ENT specialist to determine the causes of your sensitivity to noise and the resulting auditory stress. These causes can be varied and may indicate other underlying issues. Possible causes include, among others, acoustic trauma, sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, or misophonia. The first step toward a diagnosis is a comprehensive hearing test.
Misophonia is another disorder of selective perception. In this condition, the emotional evaluation is distorted. In other words, sounds are not perceived as too loud, as in hyperacusis, but are associated with negative feelings for no apparent reason and trigger, for example, discomfort and displeasure. These symptoms typically occur in response to a specific sound with a specific pattern and specific meaning. The physical characteristics of the sound itself play no role in this.
What are the causes and consequences of hyperacusis?
Hyperacusis is an unusually high sensitivity to normal ambient sounds, in which the threshold for auditory stress drops to a level below 80 dB. The causes can be varied. In addition to physical causes such as inner ear hearing loss, acoustic trauma, or sudden hearing loss, overload or psychological distress can also trigger this hypersensitivity to sound. In rare cases, hyperacusis can also result from certain forms of epilepsy, migraine prodromes, or medication side effects.
In addition to the symptoms already mentioned, hyperacusis can also have other consequences:
- For those affected, the amplified sounds can trigger startle and stress reactions, leading to elevated blood pressure, a racing heart, a dry mouth, as well as headaches and earaches.
- Increased susceptibility to phonophobia/misophonia. Phonophobia refers to the fear of certain sounds, and misophonia refers to the erroneous association of sounds with negative feelings.
- It is not uncommon for the avoidance of sounds to lead to social isolation, accompanied by depression, anxiety, self-doubt, and sleep difficulties.
Improving Selective Listening
In general, it can be said that a limitation or impairment of selective hearing places a significant amount of stress on the body, whether emotional or auditory. However, in most cases, it is possible to reduce these limitations and improve selective hearing again, for example through certain hearing aids, training, or therapies. As with all hearing impairments, the sooner you see an ENT doctor, the better.
